Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, only 97 km off the coast of Africa and politically part of Spain. It is the second largest of the Canary Islands, after Tenerife. It was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO on May 26, 2009. The island is 100km long and 31km wide. It is part of the province of Las Palmas.
The island is a popular destination for sun, beach and watersports enthusiasts. It lies on the same latitude as Florida and Mexico and temperatures here rarely fall below 18 °C or rise above 32 °C. There are no fewer than 152 beaches along its coastline — 50 km of fine, white sand and 25 km of black volcanic shingle.
The resort Playitas on the south coast is home of the annual half-distance triathlon Challenge Fuerteventura. The stunning resort that is equipped with a 50 m swimming pool has also become one of the most demanded destinations for triathlon training camps in Europe.
